SENIOR SERVICES BOARD
January 14, 1988

CALL TO ORDER:
Meeting was called to order at 3:30 p.m. by Jane Breazeal.
ROLL CALL:
Roll was called by the Secretary, Leah McRoberts.
MINUTES:
Minutes of the last meeting were read by the Secretary and approved.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Ukulele band will play January 26 at The University of Texas
Psychiatric Hospital.
Income tax assistance each Friday from January 29 through
April 15, 10:00-2:00, in the Senior Wing.
Literacy training has 40 people signed up - begins Thursday,
February 4th.
Self defense demo will be given Wednesday, February 3 - 4:00 p.m.
Class will be started if enough Seniors are interested.
Dean Witter Reynolds, Inc. will send a representative to speak
on investing on February 11 at 11:30.
Valentine Luncheon at. St. George Orthodox Church - February 12,
11:30. Marsha Forbes will present musical "God Bless You Irving
Berlin".

TREASURER'S REPORT:
Balance December 31, 1987 $1,084.25
APAC REPORT:
Report (attached) from Mr. Wickerham.
MEALS ON WHEELS:
Mrs. Turner showed her new work sheets and favors made by Girl Scouts
for Christmas.
GARDEN CLUB REPORT:
Report was given by Florence Worstell. There was an article in the
Village Life about beautification, but Florence knows nothing about it.
OLD BUSINESS:
Van Problem -
Leah McRoberts suggested we turn it over to Gail Anderson.
NEW BUSINESS:
Joan is getting out new brochure and said movies will be shown
twice a week.
Tour of winery in Texas.
Q-Zoo Tuesday, March 22 -
Free bus for Seniors by Metro may go to NASA, Allen Park,
Chinatown, Rice Campus, Ima Hogg Garden, Blue Bonnets.
Discount Tickets -
If you know anyone donating tickets, let Joan know.
Computer -
Joan will get her husband to look into computers for use in
keeping records, etc. "The Leading Edge", an IBM clone, is good.
Van Drivers -
Gene Hines is an approved driver and may drive any city vehicle.
Student Nurses -
Student nurses are returning January 19. They will do home
visits and/or be here all day on Tuesdays for six weeks, and
then 1/2 days until May. Eight nurses will be here and they will
have the Health Fair on April 19th.

Glenn McBride is at his son's home. They had his wife out there for
Christmas. He is dependent on oxygen.

APAC Report - January 7, 1988
Meeting held at Houston Health Department, 8000 Stadium Drive.
New Chairperson, Doris Towne, introduced Mrs. Samuel, head of
the Office on Aging, who gave a lengthy report on plans for the
council year.
Translators who can communicate with the Asian Community are very
much needed. Training for senior centers will be intensified.
Volunteers are needed to deliver Meals on Wheels - (delivery costs
exceed meal costs). Hope to improve meals and provide more to most
centers. The office has full personnel at present - after a long
shortage period.
APAC - Area Planning Advisory Committee - is continuing to work
on service contracts and present information to City Council.
Federal and city funding has not yet been defined for the present
fiscal year that began October 1, 198,'.
Silver Haired Legislature -"SHL" - will elect candidates in the
spring. Harold Donnaway will not be a candidate for a second term.
Interested people should get busy. The feeling is that SHL is a
useful activity.
