D. Wickerham Florence Worstell CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order by Chairperson, Jane Breazeal, at 3:35 p.m. ROLL CALL: Roll was called by the Secretary. MINUTES: Minutes of last meeting, read silently, were accepted. ANNOUNCEMENTS: 1. The announcements of up-coming events included the Games Day/ Silver-Haired Legislator Candidate Luncheon on May 18, and the Silver-Haired Election on May 24. MONTHLY REPORT: Joan read her monthly report, attached. TREASURER'S REPORT: Balance, April 1 $ 100.51 Deposit 1,366.06 Disbursements 583.87 Service Charge 7.64 Balance, April 30 $ 875.06 Current Balance $1,221.23 Minutes--Senior Services Board--May--Page 2 APAC REPORT: Report was given by Mr. Wickerham, copy of which is attached. Older Asians have difficulty with English language and American diet. Their needs are being addressed. Eighteen thousand attended the Mavor's Showcase On Aging. APAC expects to have more available money next year. The Project Committee is responsible for dispersing the monies, but City Council holds the purse strings. The committee will begin meetings next week. MEALS ON WHEELS: Three Black women run the Houston Metropolitan Ministries; Mrs. Turner is not enchanted with them. Mrs. Turner continues to operate in her own wonderful way, helping her clients in every way she can. She gave Joan a paper from the phone company regarding what they do for elders. GARDEN CLUB: Report given by Florence Worstell. Installation of officers was last Tuesday. They appreciated using the van for their outing to Mercer Gardens. Boy Scout Troop 266 will work for badges by doing gardening. OLD BUSINESS: Baseball Games: The May 1 baseball game was very much enjoyed by all who attended. We have tickets for June 29 and September 18. Medicare Changes: Eighty-five people attended our program on Medicare changes. Dr. Charles Moore, Ophthalmologist, told how Medicare evaluates doctors and how Medicare pays Ophthalmologists. Photography Classes: Mr. Jenkins is the instructor. They will go on field trips and afterward have a show. Old Timers and Newcomers Fair: Some interest was shown by prospective volunteers. Many looked at our material. NEW BUSINESS: Ukulele Group: The group has a new, energetic leader and renewed interest, plus singers. Partition Doors for Senior Room: Noise in the Senior Wing is a problem; also, persons passing through are interrupting. Joan would like to partition it off with folding doors. E. McRoberts made motion, "Have Joan investigate door parti- tion companies, costs, etc.". Minutes--Senior Services Board--May--Page 3 NEW BUSINESS--Continued Round Dancing: Round Dancing begins in September. Re - A Senior's fall with volunteer: An unsteady Senior with walker fell before getting into volunteer's car. This brought out need for paid, strong driver. Kenneth Pearce suggested that Joan make a budget showing today's expenses, and, also a proposed budget for next year, including a driver. This should be submitted to City Council. Equipment problems on the van and projector are being attended to. Joan is going to Hawaii May 21 - June 6. ADJOURNMENT: The meeting adjourned at 5:00 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Leah McRoberts, Secretary APPROVED: Jane Breazeal, Chairperson APAC REPORT May 11, 1988 Meeting was held this morning at the Health Services offices, 8000 Stadium Drive. Committee reports were the order of this meeting. Legislature Committee is working on various proposed items. There is much interest in long term care and catastrophic coverage and costs. Training Committee is working on improving the "how to do" courses so that better use of volunteers should be more effective. Nutrition Committee has been working with Asians to bring about providing the diet they are accustomed to rather than the general "American" diet. This group is sizeable and they have many commu- nicating problems. Home services are being provided for the deaf - and others of similar problems. Showcase on Aging was a great success. Next year's planning started (16,000 plus). Project Review Committee begins meetings to prepare for the recep- tion and approval of bids for fiscal year beginning October 1, 1988 through September, 1989.
