Older Asians have difficulty with English language and American
diet. Their needs are being addressed. Eighteen thousand attended
the Mavor's Showcase On Aging. APAC expects to have more available
money next year. The Project Committee is responsible for dispersing
the monies, but City Council holds the purse strings. The committee
will begin meetings next week.
MEALS ON WHEELS:
Three Black women run the Houston Metropolitan Ministries; Mrs. Turner
is not enchanted with them. Mrs. Turner continues to operate in her
own wonderful way, helping her clients in every way she can. She gave
Joan a paper from the phone company regarding what they do for elders.

Noise in the Senior Wing is a problem; also, persons passing through

APAC REPORT
May 11, 1988
Meeting was held this morning at the Health Services offices,
8000 Stadium Drive.
Committee reports were the order of this meeting.
Legislature Committee is working on various proposed items. There
is much interest in long term care and catastrophic coverage and
costs.
Training Committee is working on improving the "how to do" courses
so that better use of volunteers should be more effective.
Nutrition Committee has been working with Asians to bring about
providing the diet they are accustomed to rather than the general
"American" diet. This group is sizeable and they have many commu-
nicating problems. Home services are being provided for the deaf -
and others of similar problems.
Showcase on Aging was a great success. Next year's planning
started (16,000 plus).
Project Review Committee begins meetings to prepare for the recep-
tion and approval of bids for fiscal year beginning October 1, 1988
through September, 1989.
