SENIOR SERVICES BOARD
September 8, 1988

Senior Services Board met in the Loggia, Senior Services Center, at
3:35 p.m.
CALL TO ORDER:
The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Jane Breazeal.
ROLL CALL:
Roll was called by the Secretary. Florence Worstell broke her ankle,
and Harold Smith was operated on.
MINUTES:
August minutes were read by the Secretary, and approved.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1. Insurance Seminar September 15, 11:00 - noon.
2. Round Dance Demo September 15, 1:30 - 2:30 p.m.
3. Musical & Elderhostel Fun Thursday, Oct. 6, 10-1.
4. Bayou City Preservation Jazz Band to donate a concert
Monday, October 24, 7:30 - 9:30.
5. HCHA Home Rehab Program Wednesday, October 26, 2-3 p.m.
They provide money and see that work is done for poor seniors.
MONTHLY REPORT:
The monthly report was given by Joan Eccles, our coordinator. She is
a master at solving problems. Many thanks!

TREASURER'S REPORT:
In the absence of Ken Pearce, there was no Treasurer's Report.
APAC REPORT:
Report was given by Mr. Wickerham. Attached.
MEALS ON WHEELS:
Report by Anna Lay Turner. One of her clients is under hospice care.
She is getting absentee voter ballots for her clients and training
her drivers to instruct them. She is getting calls from people who
need their laundry done. The Boy Scouts are picking up and delivering
laundry for her. Mrs. Turner takes responsibility for protecting her
clients - sick and well. She is a truly caring lady!
GARDEN CLUB REPORT:
In the absence of Florence Worstell, there was no Garden Club Report.
OLD BUSINESS:
Computer:
The computer is on hold because it should be one to be used
in conjunction with the City's computer.
Ice Cream and Crime Prevention Program:
Dalia said the Mace Sprayer is a weapon and can cause much
trouble and discomfort.
NEW BUSINESS:
Nursing Program:
The new nurses will take care of 50 people until the holidays.
Diagnostic Center:
The Center would like to serve a meal to Seniors to show off their
facilities.
Buffalo Bayou Trip:
In October there will be a trip down the Bayou on The Queen at
a cost of $30.00, lunch included. October 19, 10-2 p.m.
Ukulele Band:
The band received $100.00 for performing at Sheltering Arms.
It will be spent on new equipment (musical).
Pantry:
No persons are using the food so Joan will phase it out.
Jane Breazeal will deliver it to Edloe Street (Christian
Community Center).

Dotty Shaw said that Bingo has been very successful. She is a
master at buying prizes for 40 - 41 people.
Gene Hines asked about the assistance for utilities. Joan has not
had a request for a year.
We were happy to have Doris Ramey attending our meeting.
Joan explained Personal Care Home, Inc., on Dunstan, Mrs. Horsch,
owner, where a person can live for $700.00-$800.00 a month. Includes
food, room, medicine on time; housekeeper takes care of the house.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:00 p.m.

APAC - AREA PLANNING ADVISORY COUNCIL
September 1, 1988 - Health Office
Legislative Committee is planning to work for an increased Medicaid
formula - allowing a higher personal income so that many now
denied assistance would be eligible for care. Catastrophic insurance
is being worked on. Silver Haired Legislature becoming active for
next Legislature in Austin.
The Project Review Committee reported recommendations for services
for the 88-89 year of approximately $5,345,000.00. Anticipated
funding is expected to be about $47,000.00 short of the proposed ex-
penditures.
Meals on week-ends and holidays will be supplied by volunteer help
and suppliers.
