HomeMy WebLinkAboutssminutes020995SENIOR SERVICES MINUTES FEBRUARY 9, 1995 MEMBERS PRESENT: Sharon Reusser, Manager Dorothy Rieger, Chairperson Randy Hardy, Treasurer Marie Fish Tom Malloy John Monahan Ruth Nelson Dalia Stokes Wick Wickerham Ruth Ann Wissel GUEST: Vesta Papafagos MEMBERS ABSENT: Mary Lee Gray, Secretary Ida Fuex Leonard Townley The Senior Services Board met in the Senior Wing of the Community Building. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order by Dorothy Rieger. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of January 12 read by Ruth Nelson. No corrections. ANNOUNCEMENTS: The announcements were read by Sharon Reusser. MONTHLY REPORT: The monthly report was read by Sharon Reusser. TREASURER'S REPORT: Randy Hardy read the treasurer's report. APAC REPORT: APAC report given by Vesta Papafagos as follows: APAC is trying to determine services needed and assign priorities accordingly. White House Conference on Aging had a meeting in Austin but travel costs for Houston representatives were a consideration. There will be a conference February 24 at the Hobby Hilton Hotel and one in Washington, D. C. in May. The Houston conference will concentrate on: Economic considerations, Long-term care and Crimes impact on older Americans. There will be six "Focus Groups" discussing specifics of the above subjects and numerous "high-profile" speakers. The state supplies 13% of the Council's budget. Problems in WUP are same as elsewhere - just not as many: people who will not accept help, crime, abuse, run-down property, transportation, health concerns, etc. SUNSHINE MEALS ON WHEELS: Tom Malloy reported they have 57 active recipients and 3 floaters. He also read a letter of appreciation to West University group. COUNCIL MEETING REPORT: Dorothy Rieger reported that it was approved that the "Good Citizens" (tax payers) of WUP will pay $400,000 for ball park lights. Discussion followed regarding benefits for children vs. benefits for older residents and are there statistics on how many households in WUP have children. Sharon gave report on Dotty Shaw. OLD BUSINESS: Contractor for renovation has been selected and he says may be able to do work in four months. Sharon is planning more activities away from building while renovation is in process. NEW BUSINESS: $100 donated in rememberance of Jim Council. Passed out Arts & Crafts notices. Ruth Ann was selected as representative to AARP. John Monahan nominated; Dorothy Rieger seconded; vote carried. Marie Fish made motion to adjourn, Ruth seconded.
