ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Announcements were read and discussed by Joan Eccles.
There will be Dart Baseball on Wednesday, January 17th which
could be a lot of fun.
A line dance demonstration will be also on Wednesday and
there is a lot of interest being shown. About 20 asked for a
morning session.
There will be a tour of the Museum of Fine Arts on Friday,
January 19 and Dorothy Rieger thinks more should take part in
it, as it is a lovely way to spend a morning.
The Hawaii Cruise Party will be held Thursday, January 25.
The trip will be in September.
Free-of-charge income tax preparation will be offered each
Friday by AARP tax accountants beginning on February 2 and
continuing until April 15.
A seminar on how to choose a Medicare supplement will be held
in February. You can have your policy examined to see what
coverage you have.
The train trip to Galveston should be very popular.
Participants will leave by bus at 7:45 to go to the train
station and return at 5:45.
MONTHLY REPORT:
Joan gave the monthly report (see attached).
TREASURER'S REPORT:
Randy Hardy's report attached.
APAC REPORT:
M. D. Wickerham was not present.
MEALS ON WHEELS:
Hot and cold meals were served during Christmas - vegetable
soup, crackers and fruit, the same on New Years. Fruit was
furnished by the caterer. St. Andrews Presbyterian church
has a giving tree. If you give money, a symbol is put on the
tree. Dr. Long and Margaret Tuttle gave over $800 to Meals
on Wheels. Joan and Mrs. Turner will interview a young man
on January 31 about prepared meals. M. D. Anderson has asked
Meals on Wheels to help them take care of two cancer patients
from Florida. They are in a building on Murworth. All other
hospitals have been notified that this service is available.
Mrs. Turner was pleased to be asked as the other hospitals
have shunned her. She also said cafeterias are calling
wanting her food contract. Six churches are involved with
our area now with a total of 13 people on the governing
board. The churches furnish drivers. The AARP furnished
gift wrapped presents for every man and woman served meals by
Meals on Wheels. Mrs. Turner said they were beautiful.
GARDEN CLUB:
No report from Garden Club.
SENIOR NET:
Joan says our Senior Net project is still in the works.
Southwestern Bell's St. Louis office has had the money
approved but the local office is not cooperating.
OLD BUSINESS:
Marie Fish was congratulated on the party for Joan's
birthday. It was well planned with Marie doing most of the
leg work and phoning. She read a poem she wrote for Joan.
We all wished we could do as well. Sharon did her part
keeping Joan at the City Christmas luncheon.
Joan Eccles announced that Mayor Higley was very impressed
with Senior Services and had donated half her yearly salary
to it and the other half to the Parks. We were asked to come
in and sign a letter thanking the Mayor and we will invite
her to our next meeting.
BUDGET:
The City increased our Senior Services budget to make a raise
in the allotment for Meals on Wheels. Mrs. Turner turns in
names of people unable to pay to Joan for approval.
NEW BUSINESS:
Joan must make a decision about Mary. She has always worked
six hours a day but with her raise in March will have to cut
to four hours a day as she has applied for Social Security,
and that office limits her total income. She will be asked
to work four hours for pay and donate two hours or be
replaced.
ADJOURNMENT:
Harold Smith moved for adjournment.
Respectfully submitted,
Dorothy Rieger, Secretary
