D. Wickerham MEMBERS ABSENT: Randy Hardy, Treasurer The Senior Services Board met Building. CALL TO ORDER: in the Loggia of the Community The meeting was called to order by Chairperson, Jane Breazeal at 3:30 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes were read and approved except for one error. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Announcements were read and discussed by Joan Eccles. Dart Baseball is a lot of fun but needs more players. It will soon be in a league with 7 other teams with prizes. Line Dancing went over so well that another session was added in the morning. Insurance people will be available Friday morning, February 9 at 10 a.m. to help with supplemental insurance policies. Copies will be made and after they are studied, owner will be receiving a letter of explanation. Marie Fish has been selected Volunteer of the Month. All agreed. Joan asked about the advisability of turning over tour money as she collected it to Journeys Unlimited rather than putting that money in our account. Dalia Stokes mentioned possibility of money disappearing if company went bankrupt or something else happened. Mr. Wickerham attended the monthly meeting of APAC. He said they have been without a leader since the 1st of June and things have not been going well, but now they have a leader, Ivan Arseneaux from Corpus Christi, and things should improve. He said some organizations that request money are not handled well because no one has the time or they have other jobs. There is a need to get people to do things. They are grateful to Anna Lay Turner for the way Meals on Wheels is handled. Others order 50 meals a day but when checked on, have delivered 19 or 20. He also said election for the Silver Haired Legislators will be May 22nd. The Silver Haired Legislators are having a hard time making ends meet - staying in Austin is more expensive than they thought. Marie Fish said after all, they were volunteers, but Mr. Wickerham said they might not run again. MEALS ON WHEELS: Ms. Turner and Joan met with William Hanley of Custom Marketing Services. For Meals on Wheels, hot meals are usual; but on holidays it is hard to manage. Custom could furnish meals that Ms. Turner could keep on her shelf and save for holidays, consisting of dry milk, V8 juice, apple, entree, 2 vegetables, bread or roll, margarine and dessert. This is much cheaper than Top Shelf and less salty. Money would have to be set aside for this service. She also said she gets referrals and one lady that moved near West University said she paid less where she lived before. Ms. Turner asked her to try her meals and compare them. The City would not pay the difference because she did not live in W. U. P. The Planning Board will vote about the Custom Meals. GARDEN CLUB: Florence Worstell reported the Garden Club will meet on February 27th with a covered dish luncheon. They will have a pilgrimage to Galveston by bus on April 24th which will cost $11.00. If interested, contact Kay Staley - 523-9211. The club is 56 years old and has one charter member, Rena Rafferty Keaton. OLD BUSINESS: The Ukulele Band is doing great. It had 3 concerts in February and they are learning new music. The Board approved the new Service Pamphlet. UNICEF financial report: They made $7,000 more than last year and they contribute the increase to our advertising their Village shop which increased volunteer force and sales. NEW BUSINESS: Dalia Stokes brought some copies of her tax estate plan, for which we thank her. With reference to Mary: She wants only to work 5 hours a day so her Social Security payments will not be decreased, but might consider doing volunteer work when Joan or Sharon go on vacation. Jim Council passed out letters about donations for trees to be planted in West University. He said he is planting one in his yard and they will be planted on Buffalo Speedway and in J. M. H. Park. Dorothy Rieger asked that something be done to help Seniors with the City ruling on not getting garbage out too soon. She approves of the ordinance but thinks it should not apply to leaves during the leaf season. Seniors should be excused as they have to put leaves out when someone can help them. Dorothy Shaw said she was told by the City to put the leaves in the gutter along the curb and call Public Works for pickup. All agreed that would be messier than sacking the leaves. Jane Breazeal said she would take care of it as her neighbor also needs help. Harold Smith moved for adjournment.
