The Senior Services Board met in the Loggia of the Community
Building,
CALL TO ORDER:
The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Jane at 3:30.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
The minutes were read and approved with two exceptions. Jane
said the Bridge Luncheon was at 10:00 am instead of 12:00, as
that was when the meeting started. Marie Fish corrected the
spelling of Impatiens.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Announcements were read by Joan Eccles and discussed. She
said our budget was ruined by the repair to the van. The
Ford Motor Company would not do any repairs because of the
lift having been put in. At that time the air conditioner
was moved. The man who put the lift in has done the work.
Two young ladies were recruited by Anna Lay Turner to help
carry groceries. It is quite a job for Charlie and others to
carry all the groceries for the elderly. Charlie is happy,
MONTHLY REPORT:
The monthly report for June was read by the Coordinator.
TREASURER'S REPORT:
The Treasurer's Report was given and approved.
APAC REPORT:
Wick said the board met Thursday. They receive money now
from a new group that also provides services with an amount
of money to each. Spanish Group feeds about 500,000. They
are to meet with the Federal'Government to ask for help so
some think they shouldn't be given money from APAC, but it
hasn't been approved yet. APAC applies for but doesn't wait
for the money before they spend, and hope to be reimbursed.
They hope the City Council will approve and pay the bills.
There is a great need for meals, etc. Two groups do better
than others. Dottie Shaw asked how homeless get fed. Answer
was religious groups.
MEALS ON WHEELS:
Anna Lay brought a sample of "shelf stable food" which she
now stocks. It consisted of turkey and vegetables,
applesauce, prunes, bread sticks, tomato juice and non-fat
dry milk. July 3rd they took each member a hot meal and one
of the shelf meals. They cost $2.50. Talked to and decided
to do this to help those who can't get out. Bedbound people
have been put in touch with various church groups, and the
groups take over. The Mormon Church helps. Anna Lay found
out the Mormons do not have a church and the leader is a
businessman, a lawyer. Adult groups realize they will get
old someday and will need help. If something is needed like
a blanket they will furnish it. She will keep the shelf food
on hand for holidays. JMH had Top Shelf but it is too
expensive and Anna Lay said she didn't like it. Everything
can be eaten cold. Some cannot manage stoves. JMH gives 10%
off on frozen foods for holidays.
OLD BUSINESS:
Joan stated Appraisal Board reduced about 85% of people's
taxes but most of them very little.
Spring Shadows trip was cancelled because of the Summit.
Joan talked to the two people who had mentioned a person (
who
turned out to be the same person) who wants to give money
to
Senior Services. The matter will be taken to City Council
who should be able to set up a charitable trust similar to
the one the Parks Board has.
Joan talked to the Fire Chief about ambulance expense and
he
said when an ambulance is called the Police go to control
the
site and the fire struck goes to carry extra men, and that
it
doesn't cost more because the fire truck needs running.
Florence Worstell said that when she was hurt and the
ambulance came the Police did not keep people from coming
in,
sitting down and making themselves at home.
Dottie Shaw said "thanks" to the Senior Services for our
transportation to the Appraisal Office and to Randy Hardy for
helping so many of us prepare information to support our
request for a lower property evaluation. Ditto for the rest
of us.
NEW BUSINESS:
Joan said she is getting the new brochure ready. There will
probably be a cooking class for one and T-shirt decorating.
The 1990 budget is currently being prepared for presentation
to City Countil. Hot waster problems after Glamour Grannies
luncheon. Fire Chief thinks we need a new car and will ask
for one. Floor in Loggia needs fixing. Joan suggests and
asked for opinions on tile. Activity room needs retiling.
There will be a style show with Craig's furnishing the
clothes.
Dalia Stokes made motion for adjournment and Wick seconded.
Respectfully submitted,
Dorothy B. Rieger
