CALL TO ORDER:
The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Jane Breazeai
at 3:30 p.m.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
The minutes were read and approved.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Joan announced that Scott Arthur of KQUE will announce the
style show and John Cline, professional pianist, will provide
a musical background. Carla Ray Agerton appeared before the
Board in place of her husband to tell us that the Parks Board
has asked the Texas Parks and Wildlife Board for a 112
million dollar grant for improvements on Colonial Park which
includes purchasing three or four lots and other
improvements. John Bissonnet put the proposal together and
funds are available. The city would purchase swing sets,
water- fountains, a gazebo, etc. Friends of West University
are the fund raisers. Tom Rushing will present plans. They
want a letter of support from us.
Dalia Stokes expressed concern about getting our petition to
increase the Over 65 Tax Exemption on the City Council
agenda. Randy Hardy agreed to talk to Janet Redeker to push
for it to be on the agenda. Jane Breazeal stated she had
noticed that at the Council meeting, Janet seemed to take an
interest in us.
MONTHLY REPORT:
Joan read the Monthly Report.
TREASURER'S REPORT:
Randy read the Treasurer's Report.
APAC REPORT:
APAC met the first Thursday of September. The Health Care
Department had six applicants wanting to prepare and deliver
meals, who did not apply properly and were turned down.
Houston City Council is critical of the meal service. Some
people are out of money, some talk of a huge community
kitchen to provide meals all over the city, but Houston is
too big. Also, there is a sizable group of Asians who eat
differently. Galveston group says not enough kitchens. The
office is just getting organized as key personnel was lost
and some subjects are hard to address. Houston covers a lot
of people living alone with lots of needs. The candidates
for Silver--Haired Legislature were present. They are
enthusiastic when first elected, but find out it is hard to
get anything done without money. Lots of things sound good
in theory, but don't work out. Problems in Houston are so
much greater than those of our West University Meals on
Wheels because of the size of the community. Anna Lay Turner
said Houston is praised highly but doesn't do nearly as good
a job as her group does, but the difference is size. Jim
Council asked if workers lived in the same neighborhood they
served and Wick said yes.
MEALS ON WHEELS:
Anna Lay Turner said the churches planning board for Meals on
Wheels meets once a year. It is getting close to an election
and people can vote from their beds. She showed us the
Absentee Voter Registration forms. The second grade class of
St. Luke's Methodist Church donated 44 small baskets filled
with candy and tea and wrote their names on them. Recipients
were very happy to receive them.
GARDEN CLUB:
Florence Worstell reported that the Garden Club would have
their first meeting on the 25th cf September. She also said
that the park on Sunset does a great business, as I said Whit
Johnson does. The Garden Club meeting will be a brunch.
NEW BUSINESS:
The lift on the van is broken and the battery in the car blew
up. The carburetor leak was under warranty. Sharon had
reported that the car was running hot and several repairs had
to be made.
The new classes are proving popular, - beading, hula class and
Meals }or One are all well attended.
Jim Council asked that the Parks Board send us a letter
telling us what they want in our letter and there was a big
discussion by the members as to whether we were in agreement
or not with the planned park development.
Jim Council asked for adjournment and Bandy Hardy seconded.
Respectfully submitted,
Dorothy Rieger
