The Senior Services Board met in the Loggia of the Community
Building.
CALL TO ORDER:
The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Jane Breazeal
at 3:30 p.m.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
The minutes were read and approved.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
We all welcomed Sharon as our new Manager.
The seniors of the Bellaire High School honor society will
serve Thanksgiving Dinner at Senior Services on Thursday,
November 22. They will arrange transportation for Seniors
who need a lift and again this year Dot Shaw and Dorothy
Rieger will act as hostesses. The students do everything
else, even clean up afterwards. Last year they also
furnished entertainment and prizes.
MONTHLY REPORT:
Sharon Reusser read the monthly report.
TREASURER'S REPORT:
Randy Hardy read the Treasurer's Report, and it was approved.
APAC REPORT:
Wick Wickerham reported that the group met last Thursday
to make plans for Thanksgiving meals. He mentioned that they
are working on boarding houses to help take care of elderly
people, the homeless and indigent. The APAC budget
year runs from October to November, but as of November 1 they
still had no financial backing or budget approval.
Another program APAC is working on is called the
"Gatekeeper Program." Meter readers, mailmen, etc,
check to see if Senior's are all right by noticing mail
pickups and other signs of normalcy. They are short of
personnel and some areas of town have better support than
others. Wick said again that he's glad we are not connected
with the Houston Area Council - too much politics.
MEALS ON WHEELS:
Plans are being made for a double meal delivery on Wednesday
before Thanksgiving. A frozen Thanksgiving Meal provided by
JMH will be delivered. J.M.H. gives a 10% discount. People
asked not to have the "Shelf Meals" again. They were more
expensive and they also had to pay delivery charges from
Cincinatti. From J.M.H. they will get turkey, dressing,
cranberry sauce and one vegetable. Anna Lay Turner said she
is getting referrals from doctors for people leaving
hospitals.
COUNCIL MEETING REPRESENTATIVES REPORT:
Dorothy Rieger, Jane Breazeal, Randy Hardy, Jim Council and
Dalia Stokes were joined by a number of Senior's at the
last Council meeting. The Senior's learned that trash pickup
fees will be decreased, but the Over 65 Tax Exemption was not
changed. The Senior's were disappointed, but Dalia and Randy
pointed out that some savings was realized.
GARDEN CLUB:
Florence announced next meeting will be November 27 and will
be a social celebrating Thanksgiving.
OLD BUSINESS:
Dalia asked if we should prepare for next year's appraisals.
She suggested we work on a platform to help Senior's get
ready for taxes next year. Jim Council said he thought
we lost the battle on valuations. Randy said Whit Johnson
is asking for support for his run for Mayor. Dalia said
some senior's won't ask for help and Randy said City won't
help. Now we know their attitude. Jim Council said he took
a copy of our petition to several people who are in favor.
Suggestions - get out questionaire, talk to AARP, get
young people involved and get canidates not only for mayor
but councilmen.
Sharon announced the party for Joan was a great success,
and enough money was collected to pay for a $110 gift
certificate, a $90 purse, a dozen long-stemmed roses plus
paying for the drinks. The cakes were donated by individuals.

Gladys Dadisman, 89, died in November. She was receiving
meals on wheels paid by the city council's mandate in the
Senior's Service budget. Sharon asked that board members
give her names of poor elderly who may benefit from a free
hot meal.
The Senior Services are very grateful for the car that has
replaced the old one.
Dorothy Rieger asked for adjournment and Dot Shaw seconded.
Respectfully submitted,
