The Senior Services Board met in the Senior Wing of the Community Building.
CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order by John Monahan, Chairperson.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The minutes read by the secretary. Tom Malloy motioned to accept as amended; Marie Fish
seconded.
PREVIEWS AND MONTHLY REPORT
Sharon Reusser read the previews and the monthly report. Ruth Nelson motioned to accept the
previews; Dalia Stokes seconded. Dianne Rogers motioned to accept the monthly report;
Dorothy Rieger seconded.
TREASURER'S REPORT
Ruth Nelson read the treasurer's report. Tom Malloy motioned to accept; Marie Fish seconded.
AARP REPORT
John Monahan said the next quarterly meeting would be on March 20.
SUNSHINE MEALS ON WHEELS
Tom Malloy reported that the service has 44 clients. Flooded streets prevented one planned
food delivery. Marie Fish motioned to accept; Dorothy Rieger seconded.
COUNCIL MEETING REPORT
Dorothy Rieger reported that Council passed an ordinance establishing fines for taxi drivers
charging above Houston rates for airport transportation into West University; approved the
selection of John Valcik to the Senior Services Board; and discussed a tree ordinance issue
between the city and a contractor.
RECYCLING COMMITTEE
John Monahan reported that groundbreaking for the recycling center had taken place and that
the facility should be completed in 120 days. The chairman of the committee, Cindy Neal, is a
candidate for City Council.
APAC REPORT
Vesta Papafagos reported that APAC representatives are working in Austin on nursing home
and long term care legislation. They are recommending an ombudsman in every nursing
center, as well as guidelines for agencies involved in long term care. A conference on aging
has been scheduled by the governor for December, 1997. She also reported that a number of
senior service centers have closed because of lack of funds; and that a Walk for Meals is
planned to raise money to feed the homebound.
NEW BUSINESS
New Board member John Valcik was introduced. He replaces Wick Wickerham who
has moved away from the city.
Sharon Reusser suggested that Senior Services have a booth at the annual Health
Fair and she asked for volunteers. The first 20 city employees who visit the booth will
receive gifts from a supply already available.
Dalia Stokes said that the Historical Society is recruiting new members who have the
time and interest to be involved. She also reported results of a city-wide survey.
Sharon Reusser explained how the planned street repairs will affect Senior Service
plans. The repairs will not be completed until September 1998. She also said the
offices will be closed March 28.
