WEST UNIVERSITY SENIOR SERVICES ADVISORY BOARD MEETING MINUTES
01/09/2003
Meeting called to order at 2:05 PM.
Attendees: Maureen Beck, Jeannine Bergt, Joe Graf, Elizabeth Young, Ken Moore,
George Harbeson, Anne Hershiser, Betty Aillet, Mary Ryerson, and Stan McCandless.
Staff present was Janiss Stump. Absent were John Neighbors, Tom Malloy and Ann
Bertini. No Council members were present.
Previous meeting's Minutes approved with corrections. Janiss was asked to contact Ann
Bertini to determine if she is interested in remaining on the Board.
Previews and Sneak Previews were reviewed.
REPORTS
Sunshine Meals: No report.
Recycle Meeting: No report. It was suggested we eliminate this function, but in light of
coming changes, it may be needed in the future.
APAC No report from most recent meeting, but at meeting prior _to-that, -bags -for-
nursing homes were completed.
Council Meeting Report: No Council members present. Last Council meeting was
reported to have been three minutes in length.
Good Neighbor Team/Flying Squad Report: Getting going in the New Year. The
distribution of 70+ poinsettias was a highly successful event. The cost was approximately
$130. It was suggested that next time, information about Senior Services be distributed
with the Good Neighbor information. Flying Squad had no report.
Hi Neighbor Newsletter: Newsletter is incorporated into Calendar of Events. Janiss
asked for suggestions, comments and input for the paper.
Activity Report: Galveston trip was highly successful. Theme lunches have been added
to the agenda and participation invited.
Previous Business:
More discussion about tax exemptions was generated. Good Neighbors were asked to
assist Seniors in collecting the documentation that may be needed. Several avenues for
alerting Seniors were discussed. Letters from the Texas Dept. of Insurance were passed
out to remind individuals to contact their homeowners' insurance company about
changing addresses to West University, TX, in order to capitalize on the change in the
Public Protection Classification.
New Business: It was suggested the Board should interest itself in a move to have the
county homestead tax exemption raised. This would be in the best interest of our
Seniors. Political venues for this effort were suggested.
