HomeMy WebLinkAboutssminutes111303rn- WEST UNIVERSITY SENIOR SERVICES ADVISORY BOARD MEETING MINUTES 11/13/2003 t, Meeting called to order at 2:00 PM. Attendees: Stan McCandless, John Neighbors, Betty Aillett, Joe Graf, George Harbeson, Rolla Long, Jo Lukens, Lyndon McKnight, Mary Ryerson, Carolyn Sacchi, Elizabeth Young, Cathy Wright and Joan Johnson. Staff present was Janiss Stump. Council member present was Steven Segal. Absent were Anne Hershiser, Maureen Beck and Kenneth Moore. Previous meeting's Minutes were read and approved with corrections. Previews and Sneak Previews were reviewed. Stan McCandless and John Neighbors are this term's Co-Chairmen as appointed by City Council. Both old and new Board members introduced themselves to the group. A motion was made and passed that Elizabeth Young be elected Secretary for the new term. REPORTS Sunshine Meals: Number of meals has picked up again. Drivers needed badly. It was suggested Sunshine Meals needs more advertising. Meals are organized by CCSC (Christian Community Service Center). Recycle Meeting: Some discussion was had regarding a liaison from our Board and to insure Seniors needs are met, such as picking up recycling Seniors can't get to the curb and letting Seniors know about this option. A letter to the Recycling Committee from the Board might be a good suggestion. APAC: Maureen's schedule necessitates appointing a new liaison from our Board. A brochure about APAC was requested. Council Meeting Report: Water rates are being revised up based on usage. Rates will escalate depending on tier of water usage, average rate being 9 (nine). Abating the asbestos at the YMCA was approved. Ideas from Senior Services for YMCA usage were requested. Good Neighbor Team/Flying Squad Report: No report. Activity Report: There was discussion of computer classes being'organized using school students to teach Seniors. The activities budget and fee charges were explained to the Board. The County Computer Learning Center is opening and we should explore how our Seniors can make use of it. The Rotary Club is sponsoring an award for outstanding and continuous service in Senior programs. The first award will be presented to Mary Lee Grant at the December Christmas party. Hi Neighbor Newsletter: Activities have to be scheduled four months in advance, the Senior sign up takes place and the activities are then organized. Previous Business: New Business: Meeting adjourned at 3:20 PM. Addition to Minutes of Nov.12, 2003: The Meals On Wheels program was discussed. It was mentioned that this service is provided on a sliding scale depending on need and this would be assessed by a social worker from Christian Community Services. It was requested that information about APAC be brought to the next meeting. City Council representative Steven Segal brought up the fact that seniors who benefit from special trash pick up would likewise benefit from special pickup for recycling. He suggested that it be mentioned in the next Hi Neighbor. The Bellaire HS Business Professionals Club and Senior Service's partnership for teaching computer classes to seniors was discussed. Jan was concerned that since the classes will be taught by Bellaire students, restricting the classes to West U residents might create misunderstanding. The board members agreed that even though. Bellaire HS_ would be providing these classes, those from surrounding communities should be placed on a waiting list until availability was determined. It requested that a Christmas card be brought to the next meeting to be signed and sent to Tom Malloy.
