HomeMy WebLinkAboutssminutes090904WEST UNIVERSITY SENIOR SERVICES ADVISORY BOARD MEETING MINUTES 9/9/2004 Meeting called to order at 2:00 PM. Attendees: John Neighbors, Betty Aillet, Joe Graf, George Harbeson, Lyndon McKnight, Carolyn Sacchi, Elizabeth Young, Cathy Wright, Rolla Long, and Joan Johnson. Staff present was Toby Dykema. Council member present was Steven Segal. Absent were Stan McCandless, Jo Lukens, Mary Ryerson, Ann Hershiser, Kenneth Moore, and Maureen Beck. Previous meeting's Minutes were approved without corrections. Previews and Sneak Previews were reviewed. REPORTS APAC: Metro Lift spoke at the last meeting regarding their hiring practices, training and procedures (such as the fact they can not enter homes). Meals on Wheels is desperate for funds to the point of asking for donations at the meetings. They want to commence seven day service starting in November. Voter Registration groups are going to Austin in October. Council Meeting Report: Council modified definitions in 80% rule to restrict size of homes. Water rates were increased effective 9/1/04 in order to pass through Houston's price increase. Certain fees to take down trees and review construction were increased. The fact that old street signs may have some value was discussed. Changes to building standards (roof and pvc pipe) were discussed, as well as possibly excluding older homes. Twelve citizens were appointed to the Dog Park Task Force, with Council representatives Segal and Farley. Residents only in Park will be a topic for discussion. The first Budget meeting for 2005 was held. No tax increase currently proposed. May be a small decrease for West University residents. Colonial Park pool will remain open this winter. The poor shape of the bubble and possible alternatives are under discussion. Monday' Agenda will include Colonial Park Pool, building and standards matters (foundations), Park and Recreation Department report on proposed 2005 budget.. Good Neighbor Team/Flying Squad Report: No report. Activity Report: No report. Hi Neighbor Newsletter: In process of getting activities scheduled. Previous Business: Rotary was able to resolve some handyman issues for residents. Elizabeth Young was asked to schedule her brother, Trey Berndt, to speak to residents in his capacity as Senior Policy Advisor for Health Care Services with the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. There was additional discussion of estate planning for Seniors with regard to home health care, assisted living and nursing home care. New Business: The Board moved and approved that Joan Johnson be recommended to City Council as a replacement for Board member Ann Herschiser. Discussion of voting registration and assistance for Seniors was held. Pool closure was discussed. The possibility of partnering Senior Services activities with Southside and Bellaire was discussed, and exploration of options was recommended with approval from Mike Ross. Bellaire partnership discussions are on hold until January. Ham donations were requested for the Christmas luncheon. Announcements: None. Meeting adjourned at 2: 56 PM.
